Hassanal Bolkiah was born on 15 July 1946 during the reign of his uncle Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin, in Istana Darussalam. His father, then the Pengiran Bendahara Seri Maharaja Permaisuara, was the heir presumptive, putting Hassanal second in line to the throne at birth. His education at the Istana Darul Hana Surau began in late 1955 and finished in early 1959. He finished third grade at Jamalul Alam Malay School in Brunei Town in 1955 at age nine. He studied at Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur from January 1961 to December 1963, becoming the first Sultan of Brunei to complete his education both domestically and abroad. While there, he enlisted in the Cadet Corps and was named best recruit in 1961; the prize was given solely on merit. He attained the rank of Lance Corporal when he left. At age fifteen, he was crowned Crown Prince on 14 July 1961. During the Brunei revolt in December 1962, Lieutenant Colonel Digby Willoughby and a small Royal Gurkha Rifles squad helped rescue his father and him from their palace. He married Pengiran Anak Saleha on 29 July 1965. He enrolled as a cadet officer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst on 4 January 1966. He graduated and was commissioned as an Honorary Captain in the Coldstream Guards on 1 March 1968. His father announced his abdication on 4 October 1967; Hassanal Bolkiah immediately returned from England. He was proclaimed Sultan on 5 October 1967 at 3:00 p.m. in a public ceremony at Istana Darul Hana. His coronation took place on 1 August 1968, where his father placed the crown on his head and handed him the Keris si-Naga, symbol of supreme royal power. He celebrated his Golden Jubilee on 5 October 2017, marking 50 years of his reign.
