Lore & Background

Hamid Karzai was born on 24 December 1957 in the Karz area of Kandahar City to the Popalzai tribe of Durrani Pashtuns. He graduated from Habibia High School in Kabul in 1976 and earned a master's degree in international relations and political science from Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla, India, in 1983. During the Soviet–Afghan War, he moved to Pakistan and worked as a fundraiser for the Afghan mujahideen. He briefly served as Deputy Foreign Minister in the Islamic State of Afghanistan government under Burhanuddin Rabbani. In July 1999, his father Abdul Ahad Karzai was assassinated in Quetta, and Karzai succeeded him as head of the Popalzai tribe. In October 2001, following the US invasion, Karzai led Pashtun tribes in and around Kandahar in an uprising against the Taliban. On 5 December 2001, he survived a friendly fire missile attack by US Air Force pilots, suffering injuries to his facial nerves. He was selected by prominent Afghan political figures at the December 2001 International Conference on Afghanistan in Germany to serve a six-month term as chairman of the Interim Administration. He was sworn in on 22 December 2001. He was then chosen for a two-year term as interim president during the 2002 loya jirga in Kabul. After the 2004 presidential election, Karzai was declared the winner and became President of Afghanistan. He won a second five-year term in the 2009 presidential election, ending in September 2014, and was succeeded by Ashraf Ghani.

Reader's Guide

Hamid Karzai's significance lies in his role as the first democratically elected president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, leading the country through a critical post-Taliban transition. During his presidency, he was known for being an alliance builder between Afghanistan's multi-ethnic communities and for strengthening Afghanistan–Pakistan relations. However, his later years were marked by increasing tension with NATO and the United States, as he criticized heavy-handed counterinsurgency and urged focus on Pakistan's support for the Taliban leadership. Karzai described the Taliban as his brothers and warned that aggressive tactics would revive the insurgency. Accusations of corruption also shadowed his tenure. After the Taliban takeover of Kabul in 2021, Karzai stated that the Taliban did not capture the city by force but were invited by him to prevent chaos. He said that to gain international recognition, the new Taliban government needed internal legitimacy, which could be achieved through a general election or loya jirga. His legacy is complex, reflecting both the hopes and challenges of post-2001 Afghanistan.
